The ski resort and tourism center of Gudauri, like the village of the same name, located a few kilometers from it, is located on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Range, in the Kazbek municipality of Georgia, in the north of the country. This is the highest settlement located on the legendary Georgian Military Highway near the Cross Pass. Its height is 2150 meters above sea level.

The location of Gudauri is convenient because it is located only 140 kilometers from the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, where there is an international airport. You can get from the airport to the resort by regular buses, minibuses, taxis or transfers.

Gudauri is located not far from the Russian-Georgian border. Thus, it can be reached from Russia by car. From the checkpoint (checkpoint) Verkhniy Lars to the resort 80 km.

The season in Gudauri lasts on average from mid or late December to mid April, and sometimes even to May. Winters are mild and with a lot of snow, its height reaches 3 meters. In December, the sun is almost always shining, the average daytime temperature is -5, at night -10 degrees. In January and February it is colder, at night the temperature can drop to -20. But due to the fact that the air is dry at high altitudes, such a temperature is easily tolerated. In February and until mid-March, snowfalls are especially heavy and there are many cloudy days. In April, the temperature already rises above 0. But again, due to low humidity and altitude, the snow does not melt for a long time. Such an abundance of dry snow and the absence of the danger of avalanches made the resort super-popular for lovers of freeride, backcountry and speedriding. Heli-skiing flights with instructors are organized from Gudauri to the peaks throughout the winter.

  • travel along the Georgian military road. The opportunity to drive along this road cannot leave anyone indifferent. This historic trade route through the mountains led at high altitude to the north of Georgia and further to Russia. The first mention of the road dates back to the 1st century BC. It passes through the hollows of the Terek and Aragvi rivers. There are ruins of ancient temples and those that have been perfectly preserved to this day. With every turn, simply breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys open up.
  • the two capitals are Mtskheta and Tbilisi. The journey to Mtskheta takes place along the Georgian military road. This is an opportunity to see the places that Lermontov described, which were admired by Pushkin and Tchaikovsky, Dumas and Tolstoy. Arriving in Mtskheta, the ancient Georgian capital and cradle of Christianity, you can fully feel the spirit of history. Then Tbilisi, old and new city, antiquity and modernity, temples, cable car, grave of Griboyedov. And also a lot of stories, beliefs, legends and tastings of famous Georgian wines and national dishes.
  • Kakheti is the birthplace of wine and hospitality. The name of the tour speaks for itself – it is a journey through the ancient land of Kakheti with its traditions of winemaking, tasting of natural wines from the cellars, the history of production, as well as visiting monasteries.

History

The history of the resort begins in 1982, back in the days of the Soviet Union. A place for a tourist and ski center was sought throughout the country. The choice fell on Gudauri thanks to the mountaineer, skier and Shevardnadze’s “right hand” Soliko Khabeishvili, who drew attention to the fact that there is practically no danger of avalanches and there are many sunny days.

Since then, the resort has been developing, every year new tracks, lifts and infrastructure expands on it.
