The Obertauern resort is located in Austria, in the state of Salzburg, the towns of Lungau and Obertauern – Lungau e Obertauern, Austria, Salisburghese. There are 100 km of trails for skiing and snowboarding. 26 ski lifts transport skiers. The complex for practicing winter sports is located between 1630 and 2313 meters above sea level.

Obertauern means “Upper Tower”. Already in the days of Ancient Rome, on the site of the current ski resort, there was a fortification that guarded the strategic road from the Adriatic and the Balkans to the north of Central Europe at that time.

Skiing in Obertauern began long before World War II, when skiers were taken up the mountain in horse-drawn carriages.

And in the 60s of the last century, the Beatles came here to shoot the ski part of their funny and naive film “Help!” There are still many memories and reminders about this in the village. Nobody knows why Obertauern was chosen, but it can be assumed that the film crew needed a real, reinforced concrete snow guarantee.

Indeed, the snow in Obertauern falls consistently in mid-November and allows skiing until the end of April. It is not uncommon to see snowdrifts up to the second-floor windows.

The skiing region of Obertauern occupies the slopes on both sides of the high-mountain valley and is organized so that you can ride clockwise or counterclockwise around the village, and the likelihood of getting lost is excluded. The difference in elevation is not great for the most part, but it is completely unnoticeable: the tracks are wonderful, varied and well prepared. It’s no exaggeration to say that Obertauern is among the clear leaders in Austria in terms of the number of first-class slopes.

For thrill-seekers, there is a real gift – the uncompromisingly black track leading from the Gamsleitenspitz. Not always open, only due to weather conditions.

For toddlers in the lower part of Obertauern, in the sunniest and most windless place, there is a playground and educational slopes. And next to the forest there is a real fabulous track with goblin and ghosts. It is popular with both children and adults.

Obertauern is clearly above average in the ski rankings. This is confirmed by the excellent service, the general high standard of the hotels, good food and very decent shops. There are several excellent discos and casinos for the fun nightlife.
